- How long is the surf lesson?
The surf lesson lasts 1.5 hours.
- What time should we show up for a surf lesson?
Please arrive 15 minutes before your lesson starts in order to sign a waiver. Parents must be present if the child taking a surf lesson is under 18.
- How old does my child have to be to take a lesson?
We have had children as young as 4 years old take our surf lessons. Normally, children from age 4 to 7 prefer to ride with the instructor.
It is always best for any child to know how to swim well and feel comfortable and confident in the ocean before they take a surf lesson. If they don’t swim well, they often get scared and it makes their experience not a fun one. It’s always best to wait until they are ready.
- If we are a family with a child under 12, can we be in the same group together?
Yes. Your younger child will have to do a private lesson, and the rest of you can do a group or private group lesson. We will keep you together so you can experience surfing as a family.
- Are there waves every day?
Waikiki is a magical place. There is always something to ride, although there are days when the waves may be too big and not safe. If this happens, you can cancel for a refund or reschedule.
- Do you have a place to hold my belongings?
Yes, we have a place to keep your bag. Bring a bag/backpack that can be closed with all your belongings inside.
- What should I bring?
Please bring a towel and come with your swimwear on.
- Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. For a group lesson, you definitely should know how to swim well. For private or semi-private lessons, you should know how to swim comfortably across the small end of the pool. Your surfboard will have a leash connected to it that will be tied to your ankle, which will give you lots of support, but you still will want to know how to swim.
- Do you have a photographer?
Yes. Photos are additional to your lesson. You will be able to view your photos after your lesson and purchase any you’d like.
- Do you offer a video of my lesson?
If you wish to have you lesson recorded on video, please let us know in advance.
- Should I wear sunscreen?
Yes! It’s best to put on sunscreen 30 minutes before your lesson to give it time to set. If you want a sunscreen for children that won’t burn their eyes and that will stay on, you can find Vertra Sunscreen in most surf shops.
- Can my family watch me while I surf?
Yes, they are welcome to. However, we find that families often won’t stay on the beach and watch the entire time.
- Can I bring my camera or GoPro?
There is a lot going on during your lesson, so it may not be the best choice to bring a camera. It’s best to come and just enjoy the lesson rather than worry about taking photos. You can purchase photos of your lesson for an additional fee.
- Do you have rash guards for customers to use?
Yes, we have them available. You can also purchase your own at the Billabong store to use and take with you for the rest your trip.
- Will I have time to shop at the Billabong store?
Yes! Before and after your lesson, you will want to give yourself time to see all the amazing surf products they have!
- What boardshorts are the best?
Four of the Moniz brothers have been sponsored by Billabong for over 15 years. The quality of Billabong’s shorts is incomparable! They are comfortable, durable, are Waikiki tested and approved!
