Frequently Asked Questions

  • Chevron down How long is the surf lesson?
  • The surf lesson lasts 1.5 hours.

  • Chevron down What time should we show up for a surf lesson?
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your lesson starts in order to sign a waiver. Parents must be present if the child taking a surf lesson is under 18.

  • Chevron down How old does my child have to be to take a lesson?
  • We have had children as young as 4 years old take our surf lessons. Normally, children from age 4 to 7 prefer to ride with the instructor.

It is always best for any child to know how to swim well and feel comfortable and confident in the ocean before they take a surf lesson. If they don’t swim well, they often get scared and it makes their experience not a fun one. It’s always best to wait until they are ready.

  • Chevron down If we are a family with a child under 12, can we be in the same group together?
  • Yes. Your younger child will have to do a private lesson, and the rest of you can do a group or private group lesson. We will keep you together so you can experience surfing as a family.

  • Chevron down Are there waves every day?
  • Waikiki is a magical place. There is always something to ride, although there are days when the waves may be too big and not safe. If this happens, you can cancel for a refund or reschedule.

  • Chevron down Do you have a place to hold my belongings?
  • Yes, we have a place to keep your bag. Bring a bag/backpack that can be closed with all your belongings inside.

  • Chevron down What should I bring?
  • Please bring a towel and come with your swimwear on.

  • Chevron down Do I need to know how to swim?
  • Yes. For a group lesson, you definitely should know how to swim well. For private or semi-private lessons, you should know how to swim comfortably across the small end of the pool. Your surfboard will have a leash connected to it that will be tied to your ankle, which will give you lots of support, but you still will want to know how to swim.

  • Chevron down Do you have a photographer?
  • Yes. Photos are additional to your lesson. You will be able to view your photos after your lesson and purchase any you’d like.

  • Chevron down Do you offer a video of my lesson?
  • If you wish to have you lesson recorded on video, please let us know in advance.

  • Chevron down Should I wear sunscreen?
  • Yes! It’s best to put on sunscreen 30 minutes before your lesson to give it time to set. If you want a sunscreen for children that won’t burn their eyes and that will stay on, you can find Vertra Sunscreen in most surf shops.

  • Chevron down Can my family watch me while I surf?
  • Yes, they are welcome to. However, we find that families often won’t stay on the beach and watch the entire time.

  • Chevron down Can I bring my camera or GoPro?
  • There is a lot going on during your lesson, so it may not be the best choice to bring a camera. It’s best to come and just enjoy the lesson rather than worry about taking photos. You can purchase photos of your lesson for an additional fee.

  • Chevron down Do you have rash guards for customers to use?
  • Yes, we have them available. You can also purchase your own at the Billabong store to use and take with you for the rest your trip.

  • Chevron down Will I have time to shop at the Billabong store?
  • Yes! Before and after your lesson, you will want to give yourself time to see all the amazing surf products they have!

  • Chevron down What boardshorts are the best?
  • Four of the Moniz brothers have been sponsored by Billabong for over 15 years. The quality of Billabong’s shorts is incomparable! They are comfortable, durable, are Waikiki tested and approved!
